The North is rich and can survive without billions generated from Southern states

The Northern Elders Forum has stated that the northern area of Nigeria is wealthy and can survive on its assets with out counting on cash generated by way of VAT in Southern states.

NEF Director of Publicity and Advocacy, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, made this recognized on Tuesday, September 21, throughout an interview on Arise TV’s present.

He made the assertion in response to the VAT invoice handed by some Southern states – together with Lagos and Rivers state – insisting that tax generated within the state be paid to the state and to not the Federal Government.

The Court of Appeal in a ruling on September 10 stopped the gathering of VAT by Lagos and Rivers State pending the willpower of an attraction filed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service towards the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt.

Weighing in on the VAT dialog, Baba-Ahmed stated: “I’ll advise that we wait to listen to what the courtroom says. However, even the truth that it has turn out to be a problem means that we actually do want to handle the basics and the style during which the federation works.

“We have all the time supported restructuring. We have all the time requested {that a} main and real shift initiative both by teams or the National Assembly in order that issues like this be addressed correctly.

“If we don’t do this now, then we should always get a pacesetter that might do this in 2023. This administration seems to not perceive the significance of restructuring; we do within the north, we recognise the truth that we have to change the style during which we generate wealth and allocate.

“The thing about is: the north wants restructuring; the north wants fiscal federalism. We are a rich region and we can live on what we have, even if we don’t have the billions that accrue to others states. Our poverty is not a kind of problem that we would break this country over.”
